Health Insurance Information - Health Fund Rebates

Over the last few years, ALCA has periodically reviewed which health funds were willing to provide LCs with rebates. The table below lists those that currently rebate/do not rebate LC for the clients of ALCA members in private practice.

Fund Decision
ahm (formerly CareLink) co-ordinate the Member Support Program. Depending on type of birth, length of stay and admitting hospital, new mothers can elect to leave private hospitals early and enjoy a range of support services in their homes, which may include a lactation consultant. ahm may also arrange care at home for feeding/settling problems (in lieu of private patient admission) when certain clinical criteria are met.

Current funds that participate in the Assisted Discharge Program are....

  • ahm - (formerly GEHF, Illawarra Health Fund, Australian Country Health, Mutual Health)
  • Australian Unity
  • ACA
  • Credicare
  • Defence Health (not avoided admission for feeding/settling problems).
  • Grand United
  • Lysaghts Peoplecare
  • Manchester Unity
  • Navy Health
  • NSW Teachers Federation Health Society
  • Queensland Teachers Union Health Fund
For further information about the Member Support Program contact Lisa Baker, Provider Relations on 02 42 219 414. If you are wishing to enquire about general rebates for lactation consultant visits (ie) not in lieu of hospital stay, please contact each fund individually.
Yes to clients of ALCA members.

Hopes and Dreams by Heidi Scarfone
NRMA NRMA Health will give a baby bonus, to be spent on the baby with allied health professionals, of up to $350, depending on the type of birth they had, and the number of days spent in hospital. A client can claim for any lactation services through their baby bonus, but only to their bonus limit.
MediBank Private No
CREDICARE Yes if registered nurse with reg no: $20 per visit. Not for pump hire etc.
HBF No: need to go direct hospital

Other health insurers: Many members are successful in having their clients claim for LC services. Many simply encourage their clients to claim and fight if an assessor decides to disallow. It is an uphill battle to have some health funds recognise the value of having specialists help mothers in trouble however, we will continue to lobby and push as much as we can.

By encouraging your clients to do the same, we will make a difference.
